University Square - Stratford

University Square, to be located in the heart of Stratford, is a unique collaboration between Birkbeck, University of London and the University of East London. Our joint vision is to create a major new university hub which will meet the growing aspirations of local people in the heart of east London, an area of low participation in higher education. Students will be able to study in order to reskill and upskill, to enhance their employment possibilities. It will provide education facilities not only for Birkbeck and UEL, but also our partner institutions and organisations.

At a time of austerity, this initiative, possibly the first of its kind between two distinctive universities, represents creative partnership working and value for money. Building will begin on site in July this year and is scheduled for completion in summer 2013. University Square will open for its first cohort of students that autumn.

The London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LTGDC) has provided not only substantial financial support but significant guidance on the project to the two universities. The project's innovation in aligning educational delivery with regeneration outputs has been recognised also by a substantial grant from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).
